For those of you with children who have to wear uniforms:

My daughter is 8 years old and has hated buttons since she could speak. She refuses to wear anything with buttons, even if you can't see them on the backside. She requests us to change our clothes if we wear buttons. I do not buy clothing for her with buttons, that's a waste of money! One problem that I had to address was her going to a private school requiring uniforms. Polo shirts and button down shirts with a Peter Pan collar are evil for her!!! Luckily, there was an allowance for mock turtleneck shirts. I found short sleeved mock turtlenecks at Landsend.com and immediately bought 5, one for every day of the week. Regular turtlenecks are easy to find anywhere, but the hot weathered clothing is more difficult. Hope this helps some of you that have this problem!

Ever since I was in elementary school buttons have grossed me the hell out. Like, I don't mind jean buttons or any of that. I'm talking about the ones on polos/button down shirts/etc. My brother will put them in his mouth to taunt me. I'm 20 now and came home from working abroad and I went to climb into bed and my 17 year old brother put buttons in my bed under the covers. How gross. My ex boyfriend one time brought out an entire box of buttons one time at a family gathering and I had to stick my hand in it just so I didn't look crazy and it just really made me have a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not sure why I have this but the only time I've ever actually worn buttons was when I absolutely had to and there was no way around it, like with my work uniform. I had to take it off during breaks (15 min) bc I couldn't eat with it on. I had to wear an undershirt with it and when the shirt became dirty from food I wanted to vomit thinking of the buttons being on me AND dirty. I really want to talk to someone about this because I even think I am insane for thinking this way about an inanimate object...

so if you have this in common please add me on myspace: www.myspace.com/sincook or steph_nicole3418@hotmail.com

omg. wow. I HONESTLY thought I was the only one on the face of the earth with this issue. I thought I was weird. I've hated them since the day I was born! I cant say the word. I cant type it. I cant write it. I want to be a fashion designer one day so when I am I'll make sure my clothes are pure. but wow...I still can't believe im not the only one. It's sort of a relief. :D

I too have suffered with this phobia for as long as I can remember, with no apparent trigger, and to respond to ek's post above, I definitely don't have a problem with insects or dirt. In fact, I spent most of my toddling life chasing bugs and rooting for worms, I find them so facinating.

Reading all these posts has made me laugh - both with relief that we're so similar, and hilarity at how bonkers we must sound to people who don't suffer. Unfortunately, we're not joking.

The vile things make me want to spit and wash my hands and I always get the same pursed up expression when I see them. God help me if I accidentally touch one! Ugghhhh - makes me cringe and shiver. Disgusting.

I actually find myself hating people who wear them, especially if they are purely decorative, large, plastic or bright. Yuk. I find myself cursing people as if they are the scum of the earth!

Recently I had a baby boy and I have to give away ALL gifts of clothes with buttons on. My family know the rules but they still laugh at me, but I honestly wouldn't pick my son up if he wore them, so he's going to be blighted too now.

My only consolation is that I know another new mum who has a label phobia. She told me she felt she actually loved her daughter more once she'd cut all the labels off her clothes :-) At least we giggle together about our madness.

My worst ever experience was when my sister's ex-boyfriend wanted to wind me up so filled his mouth with buttons and taunted me with them. Gross. I was so mad with panic and felt sick. Even now (15 years later) I want to wash myself!

Crazy days. I am not holding out for a cure though! I am fascinated about how many there are of us though - I know of at least 6 other sufferers locally. Weird. we can't all have suffered some childhood trauma.

I always knew I couldn't be the only one to suffer from this but I didn't know so many people actually had exactly the same feelings as me about them!! I've hated buttons for as long as I can remember and like a lot of people cannot remember an incident which sparked my hate, I just must have been born that way! I do remember being at a wool mill with family when I was young and there being a huge glass container filled with buttons of all different shapes and sizes which I recall really made me feel uneasy and pretty much repulsed. It may also explain why I always kicked up such a fuss when I had to get dressed for school in the mornings I hated having to wear that white shirt with buttons all over it! As I've got older I don't think the phobia has lessened but I have probably forced myself to face my fear a little but I will still never ever buy clothes which have buttons on them!!

Hey, im 16 and had a phobea of buttons (any type) from about 3-12 years old. I never knew y, all i knew is that i hate them, i'd never have worn them, and i think my fear was of eating and chocking on 1.... still, not sure, but they disgusted me 2 an extent of making me feel phisicly sick ( i don't think i ever was though) but sure they made me gag, i recently found out that at about 3 i shoved 1 up my nose, and it was since then i had the phobea.. i don't remember that but it adds up (had 1 in my nose) scared of 1 going down my throat. right? so... i've started thinking it may have been caused from that 1 tiny bad experience i had that i cudn't even remember to make me hate them to the age of 12. I don't know, but all i know is i'm over it know... i won't lie, i still always prefer zips to buttons (i think it might be just because doing all the buttons up r long) but still not sure, but i definatly know 1 will NEVER go in my mouth unless it's chocolate buttons... i never knew about the button/nose thing untill after i overcome the fear, which makes me wonder, what made me overcome it, maybe a nice top that had buttons so i thought fuk it live with it... really... i think 1 little thing can cause a phobea now that people don't even know about... but will never be sure... sash x

Good grief, I've been reading the postings on this thread and LAUGHING IN RELIEF AND RECOGNITION! I can't BELIEVE there are others out there who experience this. And the amount of detail in common is amazing (who knew others shared my revulsion at polo shirts!). Thank you so much for this posting and thread. Thank you.

I've been afraid of buttons since I was a little kid. I can't believe there are other people who are like me! Whenever I think about someone else even wearing a shirt with buttons, I shudder. I absolutely cannot stand them. My mom used to threaten me with button-up shirts when I wouldn't do something. She just thought I could fix it myself, I guess.
